The Democracy Center works globally to advance social justice through investigation and reporting, training citizens in public advocacy, and leading international citizen campaigns.
Here is a look at some of the current projects that are the focus of The Democracy Center's work.
The Network for Justice in Global Investment is a joint effort by citizens and organizations in a variety of countries to challenge one of the most anti-democratic aspects of the global economic order – the rules governing international investment. The Network provides a clearinghouse of information on these issues on a central website. This website, www.justinvestment.org, has everything reports analyzing the overarching system, to information about specific cases where multinational companies have sued national governments, like Bechtel did with Bolivia after the Cochabamba Water Revolt. The network is also facilitating discussions about what just alternatives to current investor protections should look like. It is a project jointly supported by the Democracy Center and the Institute for Policy Studies.
Ongoing Writing and Reporting
The Democracy Center staff and our volunteers are involved in an ongoing set of investigation and writing projects. These include our popular Blog from Bolivia and Democracy Center On-Line newsletter, as well as briefing papers and articles for publications in the US, Canada and Europe. Visit our publications page here.
Advocacy Training for Global Justice Activists
The Democracy Center is currently developing a new advocacy training program which will bring global justice advocates from the
overseas
to Bolivia for a combination of intensive training workshops, interaction with their Bolivian activist counterparts, and a host of activities to expose them to some of the economic, social and cultural realities of a low-income country.
Providing Support to Social Justice Advocacy Efforts
The Democracy Center also continues to support social justice groups worldwide in developing their advocacy campaigns and efforts.
At the moment we are focusingparticularly on instances where corporate power is threatening communities and environments, and campaigns to hold these corporations to account. Globally we work with groups affiliated with The International Budget Project, the UNICEF.
