Dead Wrong, Then and Now
As the Bush administration, at its highest levels (Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and others), ramps up its campaign to convince the world that Bolivia’s social upheavals are the handiwork of Fidel Castro and Hugo Chavez, it is worth taking a moment to remember that these are the same people who took the US to War in Iraq on bogus claims of “weapons of mass destruction”.
CNN will air a special on Sunday night entitled, Dead Wrong: Inside an Intelligence Meltdown, which documents the administration’s failure starkly. You can watch two excellent excerpts here.
Today more than 1,800 US servicemen and more than 25,000 Iraqis are dead because the nation’s leaders were foolish enough to accept Bush administration propaganda at face value. Can anyone really fathom the full weight of human suffering launched on the basis of the administration’s fabrication and lies?
I can tell you all – living here, not in the US second guessing at things from afar – that the political uprisings of the past five years in Bolivia are the product of genuine Bolivian movements about taking back control of the nation’s future. Agree or disagree with those movements, as you like. But anyone who falls for the wave of fabrication coming from the Bush administration today that these uprisings are manipulations from abroad – you are falling for the same lethal tales once again.

Yeah, right! Apples and Oranges, Schultz! The fact that the intelligence for Irak was wrong does not mean that Venezuela & Cuba are not sticking their dirty hands in Bolivia's businesses.
Also, why don't you report on Chavez hypocrisy? The guy is insulting the US and Bush every day, yet he prefers to have commercial relations with them than with Bolivia. Any ideas why? Because a poor Bolivia is good for Chavez/Castro, that's why. Poverty is the ground on which their stupidity is able to grow roots.
Please write again, now on this subject, Schultz. I just want to laugh a little with the explanation you are going to give. I want to see how this is Bush's fault.
Jim can report on whatever he damn well wants, japazza. If you want to write about Chavez's hypocrisy, then do it. You don't need to assign it to someone else. And go back and read his comment; he's not calling Bush a hypocrit, just a liar (or one who is misleading, intentional or otherwise, if you'd prefer that).
The fact that the intelligence was wrong in Iraq ought to give a sober person pause when hearing future claims from the same source. Come off your bender, japaza, and find us some actual evidence of Chavez/Castro meddling. Is that so much to ask?
I can already imagine the comments that will follow - "what the US does in Iran has nothing to do with Bolivia," and "Sean Penn - laughable Hollywood liberal, him and Barbara Streisand, blah blah..." But, still, in considering the pattern of American deception and manipulation to which Jim has referred here, I think some people might find interesting the dispatches of Sean Penn's recent trip to Iran, currently in the San Francisco Chronicle. In particular, scroll down to the brief history of US-Iran relations at the end of this first piece:

Geez, that is bunk!
Rummy and Bush lied regarding Iraq, everyone knows that.
But that doesn't mean they aren't telling the truth about Venezuelan and Cuban meddling in Bolivia.
Just a day or two after Rumsfeld leaves, the Paraguayan's suddenly "discover" 150 Cubans and 120 Venezuelans in the country, over-staying their visas? The Cuban ambassador doesn't deny this
Seems someone has some good intel!
If anything the scrutiny over the Iraq fiasco and lowered credibility of the Buhies all over the world, would make the Pentagon be very carefull on what info it uses when briefing the press - and specially when dealing with the skeptical Latin American public.
If you read the AP and NYT articles, Rumsfeld appears to have been very restrained, and very well briefed, in this trip. His language was hardly vintage Rummy,. and he made all the right noises about this all being a "multilateral issue" in Latin America.
And this is not looking for plutonium or anthrax in a huge country with lots of bunkers. This is the type of information you can get from radio intercepts and human intelligence, which is easier to get in Latin America than in Iraq.
japaza and boli-nica are getting a bit obnoxious with their auto-replies to every posting from Jim. A bit annoying. If you don't like the blog, why are you reading it?
Hi Anonymous,
this is japaza. First of all, just want to make sure you have this clear: Me and Boli-Nica are not the same person. If, because we think alike you think so, then, according to your logic, all posts by Dan, you and everybody else praising this post, should be written by Schultz himself. Japaza is short for J. Apaza.
Second, I read and comment this blog, because I think it is fair for others to have both sides of the story. So, yes, I despise what this guy is trying to do with his left-wing rhetoric in MY country. (Read the links I post in all his entries if you want to know what I am talking about). And that is exactly why I have to keep on reading it. Some people actually think this guy knows what he is talking about.
It's my country, you know, not his, or Dan's or even yours, I bet. And, at least until Schultz and Evo win, we have freedom of speech. Which, btw, Venezuelans and Cubans have not.
But Boli-Nica...
"En principio, no vemos nada malo ni feo en la presencia de estos turistas porque en similar condición irregular se encuentran centenares de uruguayos, argentinos, chilenos, peruanos y brasileños [y colombinos]", apuntó.
Hardly a flaming gun.
Denying the relationship to Rumsfeld visit is just sad...
"Esta búsqueda no tiene ninguna relación con la presencia de Donald Rumsfeld, secretario de Defensa estadounidense", quien visitó Asunción el martes, aclaró Liseras.
The comments of the Cuban ambassador are humerous and sad at the same time...

Yeah, I understand that. 120 Venezuelans or Colombians is hardly a big deal.
BUT, 150 Cubans entering at roughly the same time is a huge issue.
Cubans rarely get permission to go anywhere!!
Even if they did have permission, most Cubans don't have that kind of money to go anywhere
150 Cuban tourists all the sudden going to Paraguay is hilarious.
And if you were to go anywhere in South America, Asuncion, Paraguay is hardly a hot tourist destination, u go to Machu Pichu, Punta Del Este or Rio.

That made me crack up too, it was unintentionally funny.
First of all she admitted the fact that Cubans were in Paraguay. And her comments about the money issues were priceless.
What it most likely means is that this was not done with the knowledge of the ambassador. Could be standard procedure. The Soviet both the GRU and KGB used to run agents and clandestine networks separate from their local embassy - which had . That way it would not compromise the KGB residents who could be expelled from the country.
The irony of course, is it usually is Argentinian and Brazilian immigration authorities concerned with Paraguayans and Bolivians who arrive sans visas
Japaza,
Iraq wasn't the only wrong.
Study some Latin American history, eh?
or should I site a few countries for you to look into: guatemala el slvador nicaragua chile argentina... that's just to start.
Have at it.
oh, and I don't think Evo is really into taking away free speech. But I'm pretty convinced Goni was on his way...
why don't u people get a life. iraq was a big stock pile of small arms, rocket launchers, and all htat type they could have supplied to al-queda and wmds not only reason we went to war with iraq. he went against orders of un 17 times since 91, massacred many of his own people and to bring democracy to his people. and the guy who runs the page talks all big about working for some tree hugging freedom company. if he critizes about bringing freedom to the iraqis its about time for him to go join a communist revolution or somethign because he sure doesn't seem to agree with democracy there.
as an american, i have to agree completely. what happened that many people don't realize was that after 9/11, a lot of people were scared. i had been in new york just 2 weeks before, and i saw both towers fall on TV just as i was leaving for school in the morning, so for bush to say who it was was this big thing. now we had to go get them, right? and thats how iraq was led in. iraq had terrorists too, iraq had bio weapons which they would unleash on us, iraq had an evil dictator who was murdering his people. we had to save ourselves. now, though, we are saving them, and if you look at polls from the big US newspapers, the NYT and LAT, you see that bush has only about a 40% approval of iraq. its terrible.
however, its hard for americans (and i'm american, so don't go bashing on me for this) to accept a simple fact that bush is a lier; he's our president, so we want to think we're doing a bit of good out there. still, there has been some resistance growing to iraq (don't know how much the "cindy sheehan" thing is covered abroad) and it really reflects what the majority (at least in the "intelligent" part of the US, which, by the way, excludes the republican south if you couldn't guess) think. i found a great qoute for all you french speakers. (which, by the way, isn't me):
"nous sommes desoles que notre president soit un idiot. nour n'avons pas vote pour lui". it means, we're sorry our president is an idiot. we didn't vote for him.
p.s: just realized my beginning sounded like i agreed with the guy above me. i don't. !!!
