New Poll Registers Evo’s Public Support at 59%
If accurate, and if that increased support translates into actual votes in this coming Sunday’s national ‘revocatoria’ vote, it would signal that Morales is headed toward a second affirmation of his historic December 2005 election mandate.
But of course Bolivian polling is tricky business in all situations and especially against the backdrop of such intense regional polarization. The ‘ifs’ in this case are substantial.
First thing to notice here is that the poll was carried out only in the four largest cities in the country – La Paz, El Alto, Santa Cruz and Cochabamba. On the one hand, that leaves out a big portion of the country where anti-Evo sentiment has certainly increased since his December 2005 election (with just more than 53%), including the cities of Sucre and Tarija.
On the other hand, if the poll really was carried out only in the four cities, as the La Razon report suggests, and not in the rural areas outside those cities, than it is likely to underestimate Morales’ support there, and by a lot. Bolivian polling has been notoriously inaccurate when it domes to Morales, with none of the 2005 surveys coming even close to predicting his historic landslide in December of that year. Morales rural base is far stronger, as a rule, than his urban support.
A Morales victory that beats his 2005 election would have a huge political impact, reinvigorating his political momentum after a year in which it has been almost completely stalled by demands for regional autonomy and open conflict over a new Constitution and demands by Sucre to have it declared Bolivia’s capital. It would also likely jump start a new effort to bring the embattled MAS-drafted constitution to a national vote, a move bitterly opposed by MAS opponents. The proposed constitution would allow Morales to stand for re-election in 2010, something he is currently unable to do.
However, if the poll is wrong and Morales’ vote slips below the 47% needed to keep him in office – under the odd and complex voting formula approved by Congress – that will set off a new round of Presidential elections within 3-6 months, with Morales the far and away front runner.
I have this prediction…
I will make no predictions about the outcome on Sunday. And anyone who does is really just guessing in the dark.

Oh, yeah? Well, I don't need no stinking guessing: I predict Evo will carry the rural areas throughout Bolivia. That combined with the urban poor's votes throughout Bolivia will give him a victory of landslide proportions.
Now, will someone please at least light a match; it's awfully dark here.
I predict that nothing will change. You will still have MAS cronnies giving away our resources to Venezuela for pennies (I'm shocked that Jim didn't report that we gave away 90% of our oil land to PDVSA for nothing) and despites "their good intentions" (it is clear that Evo is more interested in power than change) that the destruction of Bolivia continues. Anyone who has taken even the most basic economic class, knows that Bolivia is going down the drain, just like Venezuela.
Now I wonder if Evo will on Wednesday continue to boast the fruits of "neoliberalism" as his? of course he will. I have yet to hear anyone on this forum post a SINGLE accomplishment by his regime, other than handing out money and buying an overpriced CHINESE drill.
Anon 8:07AM wrote: "Anyone who has taken even the most basic economic class, knows that Bolivia is going down the drain, just like Venezuela."
It never ceases to amaze me how the Republicans (who took down the US down the drain as evidenced by massive debt and loss of economic, military and social power globally) & and the right wingers in Bolivia seek to taint this blog with their deception & web of lies such as the one above.
Under Evo Bolivia is not "going down the drain" economically (toward civil war yes because entrenched racist elites do not want to give up state coffers being treated as their private bank) for these reasons:
1) Bolivia has "record levels of exports and net international reserves".
2) Bolivia has "a reduction of 57% in the external debt."
3) Contrasting to Bush's results in the US, in Bolivia "for the third year running there was a budget surplus"
4) Bolivia has "continued growth (4.2% in 2007)."
5) Bolivia's economy is so well run compared to the US that "the local currency revalued against the US dollar for the second year running, in 2007 by 4.48%" thus making so much that is imported by Bolivians much cheaper because of the cheaper dollar.
6) Bolivia's "banking sector continued its recovery as demonstrated by an increase in deposits from the public in both local and foreign currency, and in the loan portfolio".
7) "[W]ith the subscription of the contract between Jindal Steel and Power and Empresa Siderúrgica del Mutún(ESM), it is estimated that the Indian company will invest an average of 260 millions of dollars in the next eight years" in Bolivia.
Based on the above FACTS, is it a wonder that the hack above posted their wild unsupportable claims as "anonymous"?
Ps. Granted Bolivia has some inflation because of the El Nino effect on crops and because thanks to various bonos (by which Bolivia's natural wealth is shared with formerly disenfranchised poor Bolivians) there is a lot of demand accompanied by purchase power.
1) Bolivia has "record levels of exports and net international reserves"
Thanks to the Gas exports which we have THANKS to the "neoliberals"
2) Bolivia has "a reduction of 57% in the external debt."
Thanks to the debt renegotiations started by "neoliberals"
3) Contrasting to Bush's results in the US, in Bolivia "for the third year running there was a budget surplus"
-So what? What does the US have to do with this? Have you even compare these numbers in terms of %of GDP? How about Bolivia's internal debt?? So what about the surplus? is it because Evo did away with gastos reservados and other gov't waste or is it because we have more people working formal, tax paying jobs, or are we simply are charging more taxes to transnacionals??
4) Bolivia has "continued growth (4.2% in 2007)."
-Meanwhile our neighbors are growing at close to 10%. The picture is more dire since most of our growth comes from one time items (like hiking the tax rate on gas exports) rather than sustainable efforts.
5) Bolivia's economy is so well run compared to the US that "the local currency revalued against the US dollar for the second year running, in 2007 by 4.48%" thus making so much that is imported by Bolivians much cheaper because of the cheaper dollar.
-You idiot, a strong Boliviano IS NOT a good thing (it is not bad either, the answer is the why) So now we are less competitive, we are pricing ourselves out from many markets. And why is the Boliviano strong?? Have you ever heard of the "dutch disease"?
6) Bolivia's "banking sector continued its recovery as demonstrated by an increase in deposits from the public in both local and foreign currency, and in the loan portfolio".
Banking sector's primary source of profit is money exchange, they are flush with deposits because there is no where to invest the cash, and the source of the cash is not from productive efforts, but from remesas, drugs, and bonos.
7) "[W]ith the subscription of the contract between Jindal Steel and Power and Empresa Siderúrgica del Mutún(ESM), it is estimated that the Indian company will invest an average of 260 millions of dollars in the next eight years" in Bolivia.
- But we have promise them millions of dollars worth of gas in addition to ensuring them a level of profitability. Not only that, but Jindal is also hiring foreingners to the choice positions and leaving Bolivians to do the dirty, unskilled jobs. Besides $30MM is not even a drop in the bucket compared to the levels of FDI places like Peru are getting. Let us not forget that also because of high oil prices, most sourcing for steel for asia is now shifting to australia, so chances are Mutun will not get past the planning stage at this point.
Now can you please tell me if I should get all excited becuase Evo gave PDVSA exclusive rights to our most promissing hidrocarborn lands in exchange for a PROMISE to invest $800MM. We have about 30-50Tcfs in 5% of the promising land. So we probably gave Venezuela 1,000tcfs (at $US8/cf = $8 trillion dollars) in exchange for a promise to invest....is this something positive?
59%, Ja, Ja, Ja, Ja; the only way Evo can get to that number is through electoral sabotage!!, which with Exeni in command of the CNE is not an impossibility. I will throw you some more relevant “statistics”:
60% of Bolivians disapprove the way Evo’s handles Chavez checks; does it mean he is only going to get 40% of the votes? El Alto has more hard core percentage of maSSist than Santa Cruz pro Costas. So giving them equal amount of people interviewed is a joke.
The regimen of Evo Morales just assassinated a rural community miner this morning and injured several others in a road block. I don’t think rural communities in the highlands, Evo’s stronghold, are going to vote for him in masses as before. Perhaps not against it, but at least the numbers of assisting voters should go down, unless Exeni and his comrades pull something up.
Grindiota, the only “fact” is the one you mentioned in your last paragraph. Anon 10:55 AM has taken his time, something you are not worth it, to explain some additional thing to you; I suggest you pay close attention to his writings.
Ahhh poor Bolivia Libre has had to watch his rascist traditional political parties get a serious schooling on political strategy from a "dumb" Indian. Ja Ja Ja... You are such a hack for the nacion camba fascist that you arguments become more and more disconnected from reality.
Bolivia Libre,
"The regimen of Evo Morales just assassinated a rural community miner this morning and injured several others in a road block."

That miner and his fellow "strikers" were placing explosive charges on a bridge.
The puppeteers who are pushing the miners and other groups into anarchy should all be charged with sedition.
The poor of Bolivia are being used as cannon fodder by the safely ensconced oligarchs currently on "hunger strike" in Sucre. I am sure they will come out with statements condemning the latest "massacre" later in the day.
I personally feel sorry for the strikers because they are being back to the past. If the "freedom fighters" succeed the poor, the old, the children and the invalids will not even get a cent from the hydrocarbon taxes. All that money will go to the "civicos", the "prefectos (and their families)and to the captains of Capital (e.g. Marincovik).
Franco
The poor of Bolivia are being used as cannon fodder by the safely ensconced oligarchs
This is getting old. Do you happen to have some evidence this time?
Los Tiempos: "Una persona murió el martes y por lo menos una docena resultó con heridas cuando la policía intentó despejar una ruta principal que había sido tomada por mineros en protesta contra el gobierno. "
Is Evo coming up on charges of genocide now? Seems only fitting...
Evo may be a good guy, truly working for the good of the people. What is difficult for me personally is his level of hypocracy in some areas. Take for example his attitude regarding un-blockading roads.
During my time here in Cochabamba I've seen Goni(1), Banzer, Tuto, Goni(2), Mesa and Rodriguez. I can't remember *many* times that these presidents ordered the blockades forcibly removed with the exception of the much talked about, disputed and debated incident of Goni's violet move. The cry was "derecho o delito".
Once in a while the police or army would try and remove blockades and the leader of the group would decry the violence and the government backed down. Ironically, for those of you that are wondering, the majority of the blockades here in Cochabamba were instigated by a cocalero leader named Evo Morales.
Once the blockader, screaming about the governments methods. Now the president using the same methods: gas them, shoot (at) them, injure them, kill them. This hypocracy (among others) is one of the most difficult subjects I have in accepting his presidency.
Oh, and then there is the lack of rational. I remember once he was leading a caravan to La Paz for a protest (Nationalization) and came to a blockade of miners and could not get through. He accused the government of fueling the protest JUST to keep him out of La Paz even though they were on the same side and protesting the same subject.
I hope one day Mr Morales will lower his pride, negotiate with his opposition and unite this very and ever increasing polarized country. Until then we will live with the constant interupion of our daily lives and the inability to move about as we have in Cochabamba for the past couple weeks (ten years).
Cool pic, is that Grindio in tights?
it's the stupid part of the tradition of "lucha" and constant crisis...that is our brand after all.
I voted for Evo, but I knew I had made the wrong choice when one of his measures was to declare his old house a historical site and put himself on a postage stamp. From there on, he's placed his pursuit for power and satisfying his ego above Bolivia.
Sadly the instrumento politico is wasting their window of opportunity. A MAS plutocracy is defeating the change momentum. Fortunately for them they will be able to blame the troubles ahead to coming global slowdown making liberal market reforms that much more painful.
Now I can't wait to see what kind of spin he will engage on his speech tomorrow. One thing is for sure about tomorrow: he will speak for hours, take credit for the good, blame the opposition for the bad, and promise to soon release evidence of a conspiracy by the "Empire."
ps. So why is it ok for Russia to have a nuclear bomber base in Cuba? forget which one is the "evil" empire
and Jim, please keep in mind that having the phrase "Tiananmen Square Massacre" written on your site will result in having it blocked in China...thus blocking access to those damn chinese and their gold spam...you might have to do it with their character set.

For the people who live outside Bolivia. If the MAS wins it will not be like in 2005, the popularity in the cities has actually decreased. In La Paz they seem desperate, there is money from Gas and Chavez but not popular support, the Satucos(the violent militant wing)has put posters all over the city and graffiti for Evo with the authorization of the Mayor who is a MAS ally. Saturday I happened to be around many plazas in La Paz: San Pedro, Stadium, and Villarroel, they look like a carnival with MAS flags and posters, but very few people, Garcia Linera spoke to a very reduced crowd in Miraflores. So, I wouldn't be surprised if they loose, but in Bolivia we really have few options: Fascists with money against Populists. It is like Alien against Predator. We are screwed!
All I know is that Santa Cruz has been trashed. Last night pro-MAS / pro-morales grafitti popped up all over the place overnight. A little too much to be one person or even one band of vandals. Same thing happened before the 4 May referendum. One wall near my house has been re-painted (by the owner I'm guessing) three times to get rid of MAS grafitti since May. Zero respect for personal property. The place looks like a sty sometimes.
Norman, I was pondering the same the other day here in Cochabamba. There are MAS and SI/EVO posters every where; they seem to remain in place. Whenever there is a NO poster, it is ripped down in hours. Along Av. America last Sunday there were several "No, Evo"; "No, Chavez" and No MAS Muertos" posters that remained in place for a couple hours.
It is interesting that some speak of Democracy, which I also equate with freedom of speech (perhaps erroneously), but fail to allow the 'opposition' to speak.
A couple months ago the Transportistas were blocking in Sipe-Sipe and a group of MAS folks came out with clubs and sticks and threatened them and their vehicles if they didn't leave (they did). THIS is democracy??? It's alright to block roads if you agree with the cause?
It simply appears to me that the non-MAS people have a higher/different ethic than the MASistas. Again I will say that Mr Morales needs to lay aside his latino pride and unite this polarized country. Oh, and it should be said that the media-luna should accept his olive branch.
Is that EVER going to happen? It would take a miracle.
BTW, the only difference between Goni and Evo are the numbers, and Evo is catching up!
Congratulations Tarija! You have demonstrated that there still are brave and proud citizens in Bolivia who, with great dignity, do not accept being part of the fascist chavez empire.
Franco, ...The puppeteers who are pushing the miners and other groups into anarchy should all be charged with sedition"."... Careful, if your idea is carried out, Morales will end up in jail for what happened in El Alto.
Grindio, once again, limit your comments to the usual long, tedius, racist, fascist and anti democratic themes. Your views about the economy are comparable to those of a retarded chimp.
Jim, the dead are piling up. Two poor miners were killed this morning by the police repression. How many more are needed for your "Democracy Center" to care and speak up?
"I've learned that, above what is legal, there is politics. Given that, when my advisors tell me 'Evo, what you are doing is illegal', I just go ahead and do it and tell them: 'if it isn't legal, make it legal. That's why you studied..."
Evo Morales
Things in deed are turning ugly for the maSSist regime these days, I can only say you harvest what you sow, and Evo has planted hate, missery and blood all over the country since his rise to power. It is time to put him aside, democratically first and then to the courts.
Franco, anything to do with the Fascist in Spain?, maybe the reincarnation? Where the miners doing anything Evo Morales and his maSSist movement didn’t preach should be done to get what they want? NO! then it is being an assassination under the orders of Evo and their cronies, last information is that there is two killed in the protest. I am not going to speculate, and Jim is the one that likes to give the notice about the way the slaughter were downed, I will let him giving the details.
Norman, don’t worry about the graffiti, just organize yourself with a couple of friends and paint an inverted S on the MAS propaganda, it makes a great swastika; very representative of the party and their ideology I will say.
BOLIVIA LIBRE said...
"Franco, anything to do with the Fascist in Spain?, maybe the reincarnation?"
No BL, Franco= frank in English (look it up).
How about your moniker? Where did you get the inspiration for it?
To be frank with you, the Morales government has shown and will continue to show tremendous restraint.
To be even more frank, I think that the Bolivia Libres and Normans of Bolivia are yelling "slaughter" in public but in private they are elated at the recent turn of events.
Franco
Frankly, I'm always frank because I believe in being frank but BL and Norman probably think you're too frank, Franco.
I've lost a lot of money recently because I have been in personally uncharted financial markets. I failed to invest time thinking out strategies because I spend too much time on my iphone reading this blog and the news about Bolivia. Losing money gets your attention real fast but before I drop out of this scene, I want to give a shout out to the anon who cited Surfer Magazine's website:
Bro,
your cite made me time trave to a simpler yet more exciting time, youth. Thanks below is what I planned to write on said page.
Anon 1:15PM,
I don't understand why you reference the March issue. I don't read the mags much any more; not like when I was younger and would look to see if I was in it.
Read the article by Sam George, a knowledgeable fellow (and my personal friend) with whom I shared many waves at Lowers, a spot in San Clemente/Camp Pendelton area. Said article will provide context for why I am the way I am, my personality was molded on the North Shore, Surfing's mecca. On a certain level, I conquered it for I was famous... for a time.

This is getting old. Do you happen to have some evidence this time?
His response: I think that the Bolivia Libres and Normans of Bolivia are yelling "slaughter" in public but in private they are elated at the recent turn of events.
That's a leftist way of saying "no, who needs evidence anyway. You're just a mean (fill in the blank)"
Good one Franco.
Two dead and 3-4 dozen injured. Many wounds, including the two fatalities, were from rubber bullets. The government issued a statement saying the police DID NOT carry weapons...?
Save face (for the moment) and lie is not a very sound stance.
E-G, sorry to hear about your setbacks. Good luck gettin that in order. Looking forward to your return.
so grindio, you support morales socialist model, yet you invest in the market? so you ARE a barbara streisand hypocrite err I meant democrat. The fact that you whine about loosing money tells me that you most likely had your money in oil and also tells me that you are a rookie that did not see the contango going on for the past three months and a fool that does not know or is not authorized to buy puts to hedge. Try building some straddles next time. Since we know that you know nothing about economics you probably are also ignorant to the efficient markets rule...silly fool any economist and financial analyst will you that ETFs are the way to go...your ego probably doesn't let you see that you are no better than a monkey. Now I'm curious, did you also flip real estate?
you make it sound as if the closed the trails in San O...there was a time when you could have been the only person on a trail but now I'm sure it's all 909
all that Obama cheerleading by grindio is making me reconsider my vote. How can I support the same person as this rabid socialist homophobe. After all Evo also promised change, I present to you an alternative
My bad. Don't why I used the term "financial", it communicates the wrong meaning. Understandably, those who try to read between the lines interpreted a hastily written comment to mean something I haven't done since high school: invest in the stock market (which was lucrative back in the day when if you could know of bad weather in Brazil, you had an advantage and could buy coffee bean futures on margin). Nor have I flipped real estate since I did that with HB property upon graduating from high school (having taken money earned in "the market" and buying the first house I ever rented in California). That OC property is probably worth millions now.
I was trying new business models to meet certain of Bolivia's needs which include but are not limited to transporting crops and foodstuffs to market or to distribute for domestic consumption. Since Evo is building infrastructure including the grid connecting the pacific coast to the east coast (with Brazil and Chile's collaboration), there will be a demand for the services I planned to provide, particularly if I could arrange financing for co-ops or others learning to help themselves and helping feed their fellow Bolvians.
Something sucked up my time (and money) here regarding issues as to civil rights and public corruption.
Having bought transport including big trucks and tractor/trailers, it would have been a good thing upon exporting to Bolivia. Political instability led to the contingency plan not to work because selling to growers did not fly because they are stalling to see the outcome after the 10th. Collapsing down, I liquidated to focus on meeting Bolivia's need for an alternative to mass media currently in the hands of elites. Even though I bought at liquidations, liquidating transportation assets-which run on diesel-in a sudden $5 a gallon local economy means I had to take significant losses for selling them here instead of having taken them to their intended markets.
My point is this: I think one can generate cashflow by being green and meeting needs of emerging markets' needs in a way that serves the public good. But one must be fluid because said markets are often unstable. Which requires one to be hyper-attentive with significant cash reserves when the unforseen occurs.
Jim, I predict that Cuchi Cuchi worshipper's (I'll be generous) "speech" to the nation for August 6th will beat the time record of his "wise grandfather" Castro speeches by over an hour. (6 hours plus)
His endless rambling, full of falsehoods and a cult of victimology will be thunderously applauded by his minions and paid serfs known as the "focas" (seals)*, though.
;-)

*Term coined by Bolivian journalist Hernan Maldonado, alluding to seals from the circus applauding the master when directed to. How right he is!
Okay... I won't pretend to understand that, but good luck anyway. Meanwhile the ignorance continues here. Dia de la Patria and as in most countries the celebration included a military parade down. Civilians start shouting "Militares Vendidos" and it kind of got my dander up to see these young men disrespected in that fashion. Reminds me of the way ignorant American civilians greeted Vietnam vets. When will folks learn? Soldiers / airmen / sailors (no Marines here) are not bought or sold... they serve. They serve their country, their constitution and they respond to the constitutionally selected representatives. Show some d**** respect!
Too slow on the keyboard... It was E-G's financial discussion that left me behind, (although sometimes I have difficulty following ;-) too). ;-)
The plan of building the pacific-atlantic corridor was the center piece of Goni's second term. He intended to use the gas revenues to build the famous Victor Paz Estensoro freeway and he also wanted another corridor going north-south...so again we have Grindio giving Evo credit for the "neoliberals" work.
I should also inform you that what Evo is doing is not part of a national infrastructure masterplan but rather he is simply innagurating bridges randomly left and right. Just like his bono Juancito Pinto, the fact that he is giving away something does not mean that all of it is part of a sustainable plan. You should also be aware that Brasil and Peru have agreed to build such road and have gone out of their way to ensure it does not cross Bolivia, it actually curiously meanders the border of Beni and Pando...me thinks that Lula and other investors do not think of roadblocks as unaliable human rights. The last investment any sensible person can do in this environment is in transportation.
Having worked at the World Bank and with the Evo's preatorian guard in the development end, there's tons of help and contacts I could give you. However, you are like Rosita Hurtado, and people like you care more about your ego and simply see Bolivia's poor as a means to satisfying your quest for another marble statue for an overprice house and thus don't deserve any help...nevertheless should you want to negotiate a supply agreement with natives get enrique aguilar and benito healey on your side, but I doubt they'll have the patience to deal with such arrogant poser as yourself.
You are all full of it except Jim.
The worst are the gonistas, libres, the croat and other creatures.
Who are the weirdos in the picture? Especially the hairy dude wearing a pink dress.
