The Democracy Center
Voces

Voices from Latin America is a project of the Democracy Center and our friends both North and South to bring Latin American perspectives into the U.S. debate.

How will you help bring the voices of people in Latin America into the debate in the United States?

Take the Pledge now! Why?

  • Because those affected by U.S. policies abroad do not have a vote in the U.S. political system, but they are certainly entitled to a voice;
  • Because US corporations are changing the very way people think about our natural resources and undermining people's confidence in public systems;
  • Because some US policies have run over communities' concerns and the environment;
  • Because economic policies have forced people to travel many miles from home;
  • Because new technology and old-fashioned organizing can be linked to create a powerful new platform that can bring together citizen-to-citizen education and action between the U.S. and Latin America.
  • Because worldwide there is a need for all people to respect and listen to each other; and
  • Because solutions to these complex problems require people acting together and standing up for justice.

I pledge to

1.) Opt for policies toward Latin America which respect countries’ sovereignty and human rights; and

2.) Support a citizens’ vision of “democracy” that goes beyond elections, to the right and capacity of citizens in all countries to understand and shape the public decisions that affect their lives; and

3.) To take action: by sharing stories of how U.S. policies affects people’s lives in Latin America with friends, writing a letter to the editor, talking with your national representatives about Latin American policy, of something else.  Please write your action in the space below.
