Growing Sustainable Communities Conference

Keynote speech by Jim Shultz in Dubuque, Iowa

In October 2019 Democracy Center executive director Jim Shultz gave the keynote address at the City of Dubuque’s national conference on Growing Sustainable Communities. Speaking before an audience of more than four hundred community leaders, engineers, environmental activists, federal environmental officials and others from across the U.S., Jim explains that the global climate crisis is also creating both a global refugee crisis and a fundamental threat to democracy across the world. He lays out a set of concrete ideas of how to tackle all three, starting in our local communities.
