Solidarity Campaign with ASOQUIMBO/Miller Dussán
Resisting criminalization: International pressure recently saw the Italy-based multinational Enel-Emgesa drop their court proceedings against environmental justice leaders who stand in opposition to the megahydroelectric project El Quimbo in Colombia.
For several months now, the Democracy Center has been engaged in an international campaign in solidarity with environmental defenders resisting a mega dam project in their native region of Huila, Colombia. Miller Dussan and Elsa Ardilla, the leaders of the The Association of those Affected by the Quimbo Dam-ASOQUIMBO, were facing a series of legal charges related to their community organising work. The driving force behind both the dam and the legal charges was Italian multinational energy giant ENEL and its Colombian subsidiary EMGESA. After a series of campaign actions with allies in Italy, Colombia and internationally, we are delighted to announce that ENEL has now withdrawn the legal charges. In the Storify below you can see the campaign highlights.
